Car Transport in Europe: Costs, Shipping Options and How to Choose a Freight Forwarder

A publicly advertised indicative price for moving a standard saloon from Frankfurt to Paris is approximately €300. Another published offer lists about €900 for a passenger car weighing up to 1.5 tonnes from the Munich or Nuremberg area to Sofia. These examples are not universal tariffs, and the longer journey is not simply priced at three times the shorter one. They reflect two different transport markets, with different vehicle flows, loading opportunities, delivery points and available capacity.

The customer is not buying kilometres alone. The customer is buying space on a particular car carrier, operating on a particular corridor, at a particular time. A vehicle that fits into the last free position on a regularly scheduled transporter may receive an unusually competitive price. The same vehicle may cost far more when the carrier must leave its normal corridor, travel empty to the collection address, wait at an auction yard or meet a fixed delivery date.

The European Car Transport Market in 2026

The latest available vehicle-stock data show approximately 256 million passenger cars on EU roads in 2024. During the first half of 2026, 1,220,890 new battery-electric cars were registered in the EU, giving them a 20.7% share of new registrations. This transition matters to vehicle logistics because many electric SUVs are longer and substantially heavier than conventional compact cars, reducing the number and combination of vehicles that can be carried legally and efficiently.

Cost pressure is also visible in the wider road freight market. The European contract road freight rate index reached 140.1 points in the first quarter of 2026, an increase of 8.9 points year on year. At the same time, an industry survey found that 96% of respondents in finished vehicle logistics were experiencing labour shortages. The shortage in road transport across the EU, the UK and Türkiye was estimated at more than 550,000 workers in 2025.

For the customer, the practical consequence is straightforward: a fixed date, a short lead time or a peripheral route can add more to the price than a moderate difference in distance. Capacity, driver availability and the possibility of combining several vehicles are often decisive.

First Define the Transport Service You Actually Need

The correct service depends on the commercial and technical situation, not merely on the origin and destination.

  • A car purchased at auction requires a release document or collection reference, confirmation of the yard opening hours, the free-storage deadline and accurate information on whether the vehicle can move under its own power.
  • New vehicles for a dealer require predictable capacity, regular departures, formal damage-control procedures and delivery within agreed operating windows.
  • A company fleet relocation is usually priced more efficiently as a complete carrier load or a planned series of loads rather than as unrelated single-car shipments.
  • A luxury, classic or prototype vehicle may require enclosed transport, shallow loading angles, no intermediate handling and cover based on its actual value.
  • A damaged or accident vehicle requires confirmation that the wheels turn, the steering and brakes operate, no fluids are leaking and winch loading is possible.
  • A private-owner shipment may involve transport, customs clearance, tax, technical approval and registration. These are separate services and are not necessarily included in one quotation.

A competent freight forwarder should identify these differences before confirming a price. A quotation issued without asking about the vehicle condition, dimensions and collection conditions is likely to contain assumptions that may later become surcharges or delays.

Information Required for a Realistic Quotation

A request asking only for the cost of moving a car from Germany to Bulgaria is not detailed enough. Exact postcodes are generally more useful than country names because they show whether the addresses are on a regular corridor or require a substantial deviation.

Send the following information in the first request:

  • Exact collection and delivery addresses or, at minimum, postcodes.
  • Make, model, year and precise version, including body style and any modifications.
  • VIN when available, together with the number of keys.
  • Length, width, height, curb weight and minimum ground clearance.
  • Whether the engine starts and the vehicle moves, steers and brakes normally.
  • Fuel type and, for an electric or hybrid vehicle, the powertrain category and known battery condition.
  • Approximate vehicle value and clear current photographs.
  • Earliest collection date, final delivery deadline and acceptable collection window.
  • Opening hours, contact persons and any auction or terminal reference numbers.
  • Whether a large car carrier can reach both addresses and whether customs services are required.

An additional 80 to 100 kilometres to an auction site, island connection, mountain location or city centre with heavy-vehicle restrictions can materially change the price. The forwarder should also know whether the transporter can stop safely, whether a smaller collection vehicle is needed and whether the vehicle must first be moved to an accessible parking area.

Why the Vehicle Model Influences the Price

One passenger car is not a standard loading unit. A Volkswagen Golf is approximately 4.28 metres long and 1.79 metres wide. Depending on the version, modern Golf variants can weigh roughly 1.4 to 1.6 tonnes. A current Tesla Model Y is approximately 4.80 metres long and 1.92 metres wide without mirrors, while one current version has a curb mass of 1,906 kilograms. The Volvo EX90 reaches 5.04 metres in length and 1.96 metres in body width.

These differences affect both deck geometry and legal weight. An industry paper estimated an average load factor of nine cars for a transporter with a loaded length of 20.75 metres, compared with seven cars at 18.75 metres. The actual load can fall below those figures when the mix includes large SUVs, electric vehicles or vans.

A Golf may fit into a position that cannot accommodate a Model Y because of deck angle, height or axle loading. A long van can disrupt the complete platform arrangement and remove more than one potential passenger-car position. Therefore, a larger vehicle does not always cost only 10% more. It may reduce the revenue-generating capacity of the entire transporter.

Main Transport Options and When Each One Makes Sense

Open shared car-carrier transport is the standard option for ordinary passenger cars. A large two-level carrier commonly accommodates approximately seven to ten vehicles, depending on their dimensions and weight. It normally offers the lowest unit cost on routes with regular vehicle flows. The car is exposed to rain, dust and road contamination, but it does not accumulate driving mileage.

Enclosed transport is designed for classic, sports, luxury and prototype vehicles, as well as cars with sensitive paintwork or very low ground clearance. Published market guides commonly place its price approximately 30% to 60% above open transport, although the premium can be higher for one vehicle or an uncommon route. Lower capacity, specialist equipment and limited availability explain much of the difference.

Dedicated single-vehicle transport reserves a van, platform or truck for one assignment. It is appropriate when the delivery date is fixed, the car is difficult to load, direct transport is required or intermediate stops are unacceptable. The customer pays for most of the vehicle journey rather than for one position within a consolidated load.

A small transporter carrying one to three cars can be a practical compromise for several auction purchases, a dealer moving a small batch or a corridor without enough volume for a large carrier. It is usually faster and more flexible than waiting for a full-size transporter, but the cost per vehicle is higher.

RoRo transport uses a vessel equipped for wheeled cargo to be driven on and off through ramps. It is relevant for islands, the UK, Scandinavia, Mediterranean routes and longer journeys containing a sea leg. The quotation must identify the inland transport at both ends, port handling, terminal charges, ferry or sea freight, and marine insurance where applicable.

Container transport provides physical separation from the surrounding cargo and is particularly relevant for overseas movements. It is not automatically safer if the vehicle is poorly blocked, lashed or protected inside the container. Correct securing is essential because all cargo must remain stable during braking, handling and ship movement.

Rail transport is primarily suitable for manufacturers, leasing fleets and larger vehicle batches. A single private car normally needs road transport to and from rail terminals, and the cost of these first and last road legs can remove much of the theoretical price advantage. European rail analysis identifies the first and last mile as a central challenge when shifting freight from road to rail.

Delivery by a professional driver may be fast when the car is registered, insured and fully roadworthy. It is not equivalent to freight transport because the car gains mileage and wear, consumes fuel, incurs road tolls and remains exposed to ordinary traffic-accident risk.

Indicative Prices on Specific European Routes

Publicly displayed offers provide useful reference points, provided they are treated as dated examples rather than fixed tariffs. A standard saloon from Frankfurt to Paris has been advertised at approximately €300. A passenger car weighing up to 1.5 tonnes from the Munich or Nuremberg area to Sofia has been listed at approximately €900.

A transport marketplace has also displayed a completed or recently listed Ford Galaxy movement from Września to Hamburg at €246 and an Audi A1 movement from Korbach to Amsterdam at €340. These figures relate to specific vehicles, addresses and market conditions. They should not be reused as automatic prices for another car or date.

For Germany to Spain, a published indicative transit time is approximately three to five working days after the transport has been organised and the vehicle collected. The planning and waiting period before collection must be considered separately.

A short route can still be expensive because the carrier has a minimum viable charge, must reposition empty, cannot combine the car with other orders or loses several hours at collection. The opposite is also possible: a vehicle that fills the final usable position on an already planned carrier can receive a price that appears unusually low.

Costs Commonly Missing from the Initial Offer

The initial figure should be tested against the operational reality of the collection and delivery. Potential additions include:

  • Winch loading, missing keys, locked or blocked wheels, failed steering or brakes, fluid leaks and special handling of an accident-damaged vehicle.
  • Very low ground clearance, collection from an underground garage, transfer to an accessible parking area and the use of a smaller feeder vehicle.
  • Waiting at an auction or port, storage, a failed collection attempt, after-hours delivery and additional condition reporting.
  • Ferry, bridge and tunnel charges, customs brokerage, transit documents, terminal handling, extra insurance, cleaning and securing loose damaged parts.

Before accepting the quotation, ask whether it is an all-in price and which charges may be added without prior written approval. The answer should be included in the booking confirmation, together with the assumptions on which the price is based.

Collection Lead Time and Transit Time Are Different

A vehicle movement contains three separate periods: the time needed to find and schedule suitable capacity, the agreed collection window, and the physical transit time after loading. Combining them into one vague delivery estimate is a common source of misunderstanding.

European transport platforms publish standard transit indications of approximately three to five working days on many routes, while express or direct solutions may be offered within 24 to 48 hours where suitable capacity is already available. Other published data show an average of about four to four and a half working days merely to organise loading across Europe. These figures vary by corridor and should be treated as market indications, not guarantees.

Collection between 10 and 13 September followed by delivery within five working days after loading is not the same commitment as delivery on 13 September. The freight forwarder should state which commitment applies and whether the dates are guaranteed or estimated.

Seasonal factors can affect both periods. July and August factory shutdowns, Christmas operating calendars, winter weather, national weekend and public-holiday restrictions for heavy vehicles, peaks after major vehicle auctions and port congestion can reduce available capacity. EU rules on driving and rest time also limit how quickly a road movement can be completed, regardless of customer urgency.

Transporting Electric and Hybrid Vehicles

An electric or hybrid vehicle should be declared correctly as a battery-electric vehicle, plug-in hybrid or conventional hybrid. The booking information should include curb weight, battery status and any known accident, flooding, overheating or battery-management warning. For maritime transport, one published operator policy requires the make, model, VIN and powertrain category at booking, as well as identification of low ground clearance.

There is no universal state-of-charge percentage for every carrier, terminal and sea route. One published maritime policy requires electric and hybrid vehicles to arrive with a battery state of charge between 20% and 50%, but other operators may use different limits. The acceptable range must therefore be confirmed in writing for the specific sailing and terminal.

Weight has a direct commercial effect. A 1,906-kilogram Model Y is substantially heavier than many compact combustion cars, and a large electric SUV can exceed 2.5 tonnes. A transporter may have unused physical deck space but still be unable to add another vehicle because of gross weight or axle-load limits. This is one reason why large electric vehicles and SUVs may be priced above compact cars.

A crashed, flooded or thermally damaged electric vehicle must be treated as a separate transport case. Maritime safety guidance recommends that a vehicle should not be accepted when battery damage is suspected and cannot be excluded, unless the applicable special procedures are satisfied. A standard quotation for an operational electric car should never be assumed to cover a vehicle with a questionable high-voltage battery.

Documents Required for Different Routes

For an EU-to-EU road movement, the usual transport file includes a CMR consignment note, proof of ownership such as an invoice or purchase contract, available registration documents, the collection authorisation or auction release, and full sender and recipient details. Goods in free circulation move between EU member states without internal customs duties or customs declarations, but this does not remove VAT, ownership, technical approval or registration obligations.

For an EU-to-UK movement, customs formalities apply. The file may require export and import declarations, an invoice or contract, vehicle value, origin information, customs-representative details and transit documents where the route is organised under transit. A business may need an EORI number. UK guidance requires an import declaration for a vehicle being shipped into Great Britain, followed by the applicable VAT, customs and registration steps.

For Switzerland, Norway, Serbia or another destination outside the EU customs territory, the forwarder must clarify export, import and transit responsibility, evidence of value and origin, import taxes and local registration requirements. The common transit framework can simplify movement between the EU and participating non-EU countries, but it does not eliminate the final import formalities.

For a vehicle purchased at auction, the collection file should include the invoice, proof of payment when requested, release code, collection reference, exact yard address and lot number, opening hours, collection deadline and storage charge after that deadline. A missing release code can cause a failed collection even when the transporter arrives on time.

What CMR Liability Covers and Why Insurance Wording Matters

CMR establishes the carrier liability regime for qualifying international road carriage. It is not automatically full-value insurance for the vehicle. Under the widely applicable 1978 Protocol limit, compensation for loss is generally capped at 8.33 Special Drawing Rights per kilogram, subject to the Convention, the applicable national law and the circumstances of the claim. For a 1,900-kilogram car, that calculation is 15,827 Special Drawing Rights, potentially far below the value of a new, luxury or collectible vehicle.

The Convention also allows a higher value or special interest in delivery to be declared in the consignment note against an agreed surcharge. This must be arranged before transport; it is not something that can normally be added after damage occurs.

Before appointing a freight forwarder, obtain written answers to these questions:

  • Which legal entity contracts with the customer, and which carrier will physically transport the vehicle?
  • Who is the insurer, and can a current insurance certificate be provided?
  • What is the maximum insured amount per vehicle and per incident?
  • Is there a deductible, and who pays it?
  • Are loading, unloading, theft, fire, hail and roof damage covered?
  • Are there exclusions or lower limits for luxury, classic, prototype or modified vehicles?
  • Does the cover remain valid when a subcontractor performs the transport?
  • How is vehicle value established, and must a higher value be declared before collection?
  • What documents, deadlines and photographs are required for a claim?

A general statement that the vehicle is fully insured has little practical value without the certificate, limits, exclusions, territorial scope and claims procedure. The strongest forwarder is not necessarily the one offering the lowest figure, but the one that identifies the actual carrier, explains the liability structure and confirms the service scope in writing.

The Collection and Delivery Protocol Is the Cheapest Protection Against a Dispute

A complete condition record costs little compared with a disputed damage claim. Before loading:

  • Verify the VIN and record the odometer reading.
  • Photograph all four sides in adequate light.
  • Take close photographs of wheels, bumpers, glass, roof and every existing defect.
  • Record loose items inside the vehicle and any missing parts.
  • Note whether the vehicle starts, moves, steers and brakes.
  • Ensure that the condition report or CMR reservations are completed and signed by both sides.

At delivery, inspect the vehicle before signing without reservations and, where possible, before it is washed, repaired or moved elsewhere. Visible damage should be recorded immediately. Under Article 30 of CMR, reservations for non-apparent damage must be made in writing within seven days of delivery, excluding Sundays and public holidays. A written reservation concerning delay must be sent within 21 days from the time the vehicle was placed at the recipient’s disposal.

A useful damage note is specific: New scratch approximately 18 centimetres long on the front left door, not shown in the collection report; photographs attached. A general statement that the vehicle is damaged is much weaker because it does not identify the location, size or difference from the original condition record.
