Oversized cargo – an important part of European freight forwarding

The forwarding of oversized cargo to different European countries is an important part of the logistics services by the freight forwarders network.

The forwarding of cargo which has a size and weight exceeding the maximum permissible ones happens all of the time.  This is why the international freight forwarders have vehicles which have a bigger weight and length, so that they can offer this kind of freight forwarding services for oversized cargo,

Indivisibility of cargo

Oversized loads have size or weight exceeding the maximum permissible because they can not be divided up and spread out for transportation of two or more.  The indivisibility may be due to the fact that the load itself is an indivisible whole and can not be transported in a vehicle for ordinary cargo. In other loads, the indivisibility may be due to the fact that dividing or breaking down the load to smaller parts for international freight services may increase the risk of it becoming damaged.

Oversized vehicles for the transport of extremely large or heavy loads

With the amended rules of Ordinance 11 international car transport, the terms for oversized vehicles were specified. The concepts of trailers and semi-trailers were also specified. Trailers and semi-trailers are essential tools for international freight forwarding, when the goods are oversized.

Specifying the maximum allowable sizes and mass loaded per axle of the vehicle

Article 5 of the Ordinance specifies the maximum permissible size.

Article 6 specifies the maximum permissible mass.

Article 7 specifies the maximum permissible axle loads.

Rule for at least one dimension of the vehicle exceeding the limits

According to the amendments in Ordinance 11 for international freight forwarding, when at least one of the dimensions of the vehicle with cargo or without cargo exceeds the maximum limits set out in Article 5, it is for oversized shipments.

Here are the maximum limits set out in Article 5:

  • Width – 2.55 m
  • Width of refrigerated vehicle or one with isothermal settings – 2.60 m
  • height – 4.00 m

The length is specified for the different types of vehicles. The ones applicable to international freight services widths include:

  • For all vehicles (except buses) – 12 m
  • For trailers – 12 m
  • For vehicles with a trailer – 18.75 m

New requirements under Regulation 11 for the pneumatic suspension on the driving axle or axle

Under the new requirements, the suspension system must have a minimum spring effect of 75%.
